Saddam Hussein's execution lets Masterminds of Crimes against Humanity go free

by Yakov Samuel

  Saddam Hussein

Saddam Hussein at U.S.-sponsored Iraqi Trial.

When Saddam Hussein perpetrated atrocities against the Iraqi people, he was not operating as a "free standing" madman. Indeed, the trial of Saddam Hussein which ended in his execution, made him out to the Mastermind of Crimes against Humanity. This erroneous premise made the trial of Saddam Hussein a complete sham, and travesty of justice. It is a well known historic fact, that Saddam Hussein carried out the draconian and oppressive "containment" politics of U.S. foreign policy. That foreign policy was directed at the represented threat of "Islamic fundamentalism". Saddam Hussein was simply a willing and eager soldier acting in behalf of the well publicized Middle East policy objectives of the U.S. political-military-industrial complex. Mr. Hussein was an accomplice of U.S. foreign policy interests which seek to divide, rule, control, and conquer the Middle East for its oil riches.

The trial of Saddam Hussein was administered in U.S. Bush administration-controlled Iraq, rather than in the more appropriate venue of the International Court of Criminal Justice. In so doing, various apparent U.S. complicities associated with the Saddam Hussein regime, could be repressed under a "de jure" U.S. Bush administration sponsored Kangaroo Court, in Iraq.

With the execution of Mr. Hussein, the criminal masterminds of his oppressive regime continue to perpetrate conditions for civil war in Iraq, including a worsening culture of violence, oppression, and environmental destruction. Indeed, the footprints of these same criminal masterminds are evident across the globe, from the U.S. domestic disenfranchisement of the poor and "middle class" in favour of corporate elites in America, to the genocide in Sudan, to negligence concerning Global Warming, to "open air concentration camps" associated with the horrific AIDS pandemic.

It is furthermore notable that outgoing U.N. General Secretary Kofi Annan admitted that the direct intervention of the U.S. in the post Saddam Hussein Iraq, has been responsible for more death and destruction than the grounds on which Mr. Hussein had been executed.

Donald Rumsfeld

Donald Rumsfeld championed invasion of Iraq based upon fabricated representation concerning "Weapons of Mass Destruction". The architects of this fabrication have been responsible for an estimated more than 2 million deaths in Iraq.

The ultimate injustice of the execution of Mr. Hussein, is that the masterminds of his regime within the prism of U.S. foreign policy, will continue to be free to execute further Crimes against Humanity, which complement their greed-driven objectives.

The execution of Mr. Hussein as a simply a willing foot soldier is hypocritical, and violates standards of international legal jurisprudence, due process, and principles of constitutionalism. The execution of Mr. Hussein has not stopped conditions of civil war in Iraq, and has only substantively served those interests which seek to repress his knowledge of the U.S. backers of his regime.

Only by holding the actual architects of Mr. Hussein's regime legally accountable for their atrocities, will justice be substantively served pursuant to international law. An enduring peace in Iraq can only be achieved with the withdrawal of the belligerent military presence of the U.S. and its "coalition partners". The creation of condition for peace in Iraq requires such a timely needed withdrawal, in favour of U.N. peacekeepers who can restore true sovereignty and national self-determination to the Iraq people, along with U.S. financial compensation to the Iraq people for a contrived war. However, such an approach although needed, is unlikely, as long as a venal, megalomaniacal, and greed-driven political-military-industrial complex drives U.S. foreign policy objectives.
