Tories criticize Conservative and Liberal secrecy over U.S. Bush administration sponsored SPP Summit
Edited by Jim Love
Truro, NS - A recent poll's results were that 46% of Canadians surveyed "were not sure where the Conservative government wants to go." Should the question be asked "Where is Canada going in the Security and Prosperity Partnership?" the figure would rise to near 100%, aside from those business interests informed by Canada's members on the North American Competitiveness Council.
The August 20-21st Montebello meeting of the chief executives of Canada, the United States and Mexico Prime Minister Stephen Harper have no sanction for decision making from their respective legislative bodies. Actions have been and are being undertaken through the executive powers of establishing committees and altering regulations.
As the reshaped Cabinet considers the New Government of Canada's agenda into the next session these words of Rodrigue Tremblay "There has been no thorough public debate on the issue, even though the minority Harper government would certainly have to consult and persuade Canadians before tabling any special legislation that would need to be enacted before the project could be implemented."
The Harper government to this point has undertaken no dialogue. A secret meeting in Banff, blacked out minutes of a February meeting obtained under the Access to Information Act, a House of Commons Committee ended by the Chair, refusal to be represented at a meeting to consider the impact of the Partnership on the eve of the August meeting.
Hopefully the arrangements being considered at the Montebello Meeting will be brought forward to initiate dialogue so the discussion about the SPP does not continue to "be dominated by alleged "fearmongers and conspiracy theorists".
