Why I am a Canadian nationalist, who speaks out

by Peter Tremblay

  Downtown Toronto

I am a Canadian progressive nationalist, because I believe that, as Canadians, we have a right to our own national self-determination. I believe in the affirmation of a Canada, where we, as Canadians, have control over our own lives, and destiny as a society. The current government of Stephen Harper, along with his allies in the Liberal, and other political parties, as well as Big Business interests, are currently presiding over our national destruction. This is occurring under the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA),and the so-called Security and Prosperity Partnership (SPP). As a Canadian progressive nationalist, I therefore very strongly believe that being good neighbours with the United States, does not mean accepting a course of cultural, political, and economic assimilation, which sells out our national soul as a nation.

Foremost, I am a Canadian nationalist because I indeed believe in the specific possibilities of Canada. That is to say, I believe in the fulfillment of our national destiny as a socially progressive society. In such a society, the quality-of-living of all Canadians will be affirmed. without prejudice.

As a Canadian progressive nationalist, I reject the idea in relation to the traditional claims of Quebecois and other traditional regressive nationalists, that a nation is created to primarily serve one ethno-linguistic group over the others. As a forward-thinking progressive nationalist I believe that Canadian nationhood as a multicultural experiment, must be allowed to evolve and strengthen. I believe in the affirmation of the inspiring possibilities of a cross-cultural synergistic bringing together of the human spirit, Canada is as a vital operating example to the world.

I believe that released from the elite agenda of greed, that now seeks to turn our society into a U.S. colony, that we can, for example, eradicate poverty which manifests itself in features such as homelessness to the disenfranchisement of aboriginal people. I believe in further strengthening our universal public healthcare system, along with rejuvenating the kind of Canadian social policy innovations, which have traditionally made our social landscape including our cities the envy of the world. I also believe in defending against the overtake of our unique Canadian institutions, (which in part, express our national identity, and which constitute vital parts of our national heritage) from take-over by greed driven foreign corporate interests, that operate to undermine our national sovereignty.
