Ontario Voters Beware: MMP referendum appears to be a right wing trick against progressive-minded people by John Stokes
The main argument that is being used to get Ontario voters to support the proposed MMP (mixed-member proportional) is very persuasive to progressive-minded people in the Province on Ontario. That argument is that supposedly progressive parties like the Greens, will be able to get political party representation at Queen’s Park. The accompanying argument is that MMP would lead to the advancement of policies and legislation in defence of social justice and environmental protection, through the parliamentary affirmation of the progressive voices that MMP would allegedly help support. Sounds like a great concept. Doesn't it? The problem appears to be that MMP is an apparent public relations trick to further distort and not support democracy. Don’t get fooled by the hype. Indeed, IF, in fact, MMP was actually in the interest of strengthening democracy, rest assured, Big Business interests would have mounted a very well organized and well-financed campaign against it. It is obvious that Big Business and accompanying right wing intellectuals support MMP behind closed doors. Where do you think that some of the money for those nice looking campaign signs and campaign infrastructure in general, is coming from? The proposed MMP system will work very well for well organized and financed right wing special interests that support such issues as religious fundamentalist schools, destroying labour laws; anti-immigration/racist groups, and other fascistic groups that “can’t get their way” in the current political environment. Such groups are much more likely to get MMP's 3% threshold for political representation, than competing progressive groups, i.e. anti-poverty activists. Such currently disenfranchised activist groups have much less money to spend on sophisticated campaigns. In other words, MMP would likely lead to the seizing of Ontario's political development into the hands of right wing splinter groups, and the subsequent creation of right wing political coalitions led by Ontario's Provincial Conservative Party. MMP, therefore, threatens to further transform Ontario from a democracy, and into a right wing and corporate controlled "capitalistocracy" It is apparent that the progressive groups that support the MMP have been manipulated into supporting a system that is highly vulnerable to becoming an even worse political distortion of democracy in the Province of Ontario.
