NDP exposes Conservative and Liberal collusion on the Mulroney-Schreiber Affair
Edited by Traci Lawson
After weeks of Conservative-Liberal delays, everyday Canadians are starting to get some answers on the Mulroney-Schreiber affair. NDP pressure has made it possible for Karlheinz Schreiber to appear before a Parliamentary Committee to explain his allegations that he gave former Prime Minister Brian Mulroney a $300,000 cash payment.
"We are hoping Mr. Schreiber will fully collaborate in the coming days so we can get to the bottom of this once and for all," said NDP Privacy and Ethics Critic Pat Martin (Winnipeg Centre).
Mr. Martin and NDP Deputy Leader Thomas Mulcair (Outremont) sit on the Ethics Committee and are anxious to get some answers from Mr. Schreiber.
The NDP has been urging all parties to support efforts to get answers since new allegations came forward about the German businessman's dealings with the former prime minister. However, Conservative and Liberal delays meant Mr. Schreiber was almost extradited before being able to testify.
Mr. Martin had requested in late November 2007, a Speaker's Warrant to bypass Conservative and Liberal delays and get Mr. Schreiber to Ottawa before his December 1 extradition date to make sure ordinary Canadians could hear Mr. Schreiber's side of the story.
”We’re going to make sure our questions are answered," said Mulcair. "It is our responsibility to get the answers Canadians deserve.”
The Committee hearing is just the first step. The NDP is also calling on the Harper Conservatives to ensure Mr. Schreiber is not extradited before he can testify at the full public inquiry in the new year.
"Hardworking Canadians have a right to know the truth - they're tired of hearing about their tax-dollars being misused in Conservative and Liberal scandals," said Martin.
