Sexapalooza debuts in Ottawa on January 18, 19, and 20: Ready Or Not

Is Ottawa ready for an adult trade show? This is the one question that perplexes me every time it pops up, which is not to say we don’t get all sorts of unusual questions here at the Sexapalooza office. However the question about Ottawa’s readiness for a weekend of grown-up fun strikes me as very telling.

Ottawa, our Nation’s Capital, evokes images of bureaucrats, tulips and the frozen Rideau a-flurry with skaters. It’s a mid-sized city with an international presence, an established arts and cultural community, diverse religious and spiritual communities, and a hockey team that’s on the rise. When chatting about Ottawa, sex and the adult entertainment business doesn’t usually enter the discussion. It’s true. When people talk about Montreal, romance usually comes into the picture. Niagara Falls is the home of the honey-moon and all the naughtiness that implies. Toronto has the second largest Pride march in the world next to San Fran. Which is not all about sex, but there’s certainly some celebrating of the libido going on that day. But Ottawa? I imagine the words ringing through the halls, “No sex, please, we’re in session.”

So is Ottawa ready for an adult oriented trade show, complete with strippers, porn stars, leather lingerie and scantily clad men and women parading about like they just don’t care?

Jonathan and fans on the Bondage Bed.

We’ll be answering that question for sure this weekend, but in the days leading up to the opening of Sexapalooza: The Show For Adults Who Play our office has been inundated with e-mails and phone calls with people wanting to know more, wanting tickets, wanting to enter a last minute booth or seminar. The people of Ottawa are excited.

Our exhibitors and suppliers tell us that they’re hearing people talk about Sexapalooza on the bus, in coffee shops and, yes, in casual conversations all over town. The booking manager of our hotel tells us “that’s all that people are talking about.” Journalism students from Carlton have decided this is the hot topic for their projects this semester and we’re being swamped with requests for student press passes.

The adult business has been a presence in Ottawa as much as any other city. There are dozens of successful adult stores, strip clubs, gentlemen’s clubs and adult services being provided in storefronts and homes throughout the city. And then there’s the rise of strippercise and pole dancing as a fitness craze. This new form of aerobic exercise is not lost on the health conscious in the Capital. Many store owners say they find Ottawa to be a great place to run an adult business. All those traveling dignitaries have to find something to do to pass the time, after all.

The Adult Fun Superstore and Breathless are two Ottawa businesses that were behind Sexapalooza from the beginning. They knew there would be interest in the show. Dozens of other businesses are gearing up to present their products and services. Everyone is looking forward to a fun, open minded weekend of shopping and entertainment.
