British Columbia's Green Party provides leadership on carbon tax to inspire reduced reliance on Greenhouse Gas pollution industries
by Heather Drugge
VICTORIA — BC Green Party leader Jane Sterk calls on British Columbia to immediately implement a carbon tax as a meaningful way to address climate change and help meet BC's greenhouse gas reduction goals."I propose that BC work with the federal government to implement a $50 a tonne carbon tax," said Sterk.
"The days of cheap and abundant energy are over. A carbon tax sends a strong signal that wasting oil and gas has real costs to the economy, the environment and our quality of life, and simply cannot be allowed to go on unchecked.
"As a "tax shift," this levy would increase the cost of products and services that rely on oil and gas, while reducing the costs of products that do not rely on fossil fuels," said Sterk. "The overall tax burden would not go up, but we would no longer be rewarding activities that pollute and contribute to global warming."
