Ontario's Homeless Pets information published ‘online’ in record numbers
Special to The Canadian
Potential adopters can visit over 200 Ontario animal placement groups on Petfinder.com.
The number of Ontario pets listed on Petfinder.com has grown significantly. Petfinder.com has announced that over 200 animal welfare groups in the Province are posting their pets on the largest database of homeless pets on the Web.
"The numbers are gratifying," said Betsy Saul, co-founder of Petfinder, "because they mean that more homeless pets in Ontario are going to find permanent homes.” Petfinder.com has facilitated 12 million adoptions since its creation in 1996.
The website features over 254,000 homeless pets in over 11,500 animal placement groups. Each pet has its own ‘Pet Notes’ page with a photo and description. Visitors to the site enter their search criteria, and a list comes back that is ranked according to the visitors’ Postal Code. Adoptions are handled by the organization where the pet is housed.
Cathy de Guzman, Mississauga, said, "I always wanted to have a dog for my two sons once they were old enough to take responsibility for owning a pet. I decided to take a look at Petfinder.com to find the perfect one. That's where I found Pumpkin. Our family decided that she was the one for us."
The website not only lists cats and dogs, which make up the bulk of the listings, but also
horses, reptiles, rabbits, pocket pets, pigs and others.
Thanks to its sponsors, using Petfinder.com is free, both to its members and to potential
adopters. Sponsors include BISSELL Homecare, Inc., a manufacturer of home cleaning and floor care products, PETCO, a national pet supply retailer that sponsors in-store adoptions and provides coupon books for new adopters, The Animal Rescue website, and Merial, maker of the number one veterinary-recommended flea and tick preventative FRONTLINE®, and heartworm preventative HEARTGARD®.
