Action Party attracts supporters and candidates seeking real progressive change in Canada

Grant Baudais.

For me, I have never really been politically active until only in the last 7-8 years. Like the majority of Canadians, I didn't give politics much thought other than to show up on election day and cast my vote for someone who I had never met nor knew little about as far as their political beliefs and the position of the party they represented were concerned.

But like a growing number of Canadians, I started to "wake up". I began to realize that instead of things getting better for our country and its people, things were slowly going in the opposite direction. Despite all the promises made and rarely kept over the years by our elected representatives, things have been getting progressively worse, not better.

Our elected representatives are now largely out of touch with the people to the point where serving the public interest is no longer the priority but serving one's own interests as an elected representative and the party they represent now appears to be the norm.

I may not have a great deal of "political" experience but, I do have a great deal of "life" experience, enough to know when some government policy or law either defies logic and makes no sense or clearly does not serve the best interests of the people of this country. And, unfortunately, this is becoming more frequent in Canadian politics .

If previous political experience is the prerequisite for "peace, order and good government" in this country then I would have to say, based on my own observations, that political experience is more of a detriment than a benefit.

Within most, if not all of the current political parties, an elected representative is required to follow party policy, even to the point where it conflicts with one's own values and the best interests of the people. In other words, most sheep-like elected representatives blindly follow their shepherd (leader) and vote as they are told without question. That is the job of the party whip, to keep the sheep in line. Hardly an independent and free thinking concept when these individuals have been entrusted with serving the best interests of the people of their constituency and the country.

The biggest reason for things being the way they are politically is the rampant ignorance and apathy festering in our society. And this is not totally the fault of the individual. We are brought up never knowing or promoting the concept of self-worth, therefore believing that, as an individual, we cannot effect change within our society. We are brought up never knowing or having any idea of the rights we have as human beings and the power that comes with that knowledge. And of the very few who recognize the power they have within their human rights, they rarely exercise those rights for their own benefit, and even for the benefit of others because they are simply too busy trying to survive and keep a roof over their heads and food on the table and have no time left to recognize what is really going on around them.

Ultimately, we end up forgetting we have any rights at all thus allowing the powers that be to slowly take them away from us forever. As the old saying goes: Rights are like muscles, if you don't use them, you lose them.

As a society, it is largely our indifference to public affairs that gets us into trouble. Our elected officials and government, as well intentioned as they may be, are ultimately influenced by powerful corporate and financial forces. Our governments, past and present, liberal or conservative, have unfortunately being acting in the best interest of this small and powerful group of elite and not in the best interest of the people and the country.

This trend will continue unless we break the cycle. Each and every one of us has an ongoing duty and responsibility, as citizens of this great country, to hold our government to account at all times because our responsibility as citizens does not simply begin and end on election day. We all have a duty and obligation to stand up at any time and say “NO” when our elected representatives do not act in our best interest. We need to hold them to account for their actions or inactions.

After all, Plato once said: "The price good people pay for their indifference to public affairs is to be ruled by evil men."

I have chosen to support the Canadian Action Party (CAP), because it is committed to serving the best interests of all the people of this country, not just a select few individuals or organizations. Any elected Canadian Action Party MP is free to act, and vote, not only in the best interest of the people who elected him/her, but also in the best interest of the country. The Canadian Action Party will never have a party whip. CAP is a party of individuals who will rely upon reason and common sense and will vote their conscience, even over party policy because serving the best interests of the people who elected them is paramount.

CAP is committed to dealing with the real issues and root causes of many of our current problems, not the symptoms. And unless we deal with the root causes, things will never get better than they are. In fact, they will just continue to get worse unless enough people wake up and demand real change. And the only way to effect change is to elect individuals who are absolutely committed to taking the necessary steps to effect change for the ultimate benefit of the people whom they represent and for the benefit of the country.
