Awe Inspiring Tour of Bhutan Combines Photography and Philosophy

A Vancouver-based photographer is leading a tour to the kingdom of Bhutan for spiritually-minded people who want to learn how to take better pictures.

"Bhutan may be the most awe-inspiring place on earth," says Jaime Kowal. "Its royal palaces, sacred shrines, friendly people and panoramic Himalayan landscapes truly stimulate people's creative juices." Ms. Kowal's photographic workshops during the tour combine group instruction, experiential learning and one-on-one coaching.

The 10-day trip will be a spiritual journey as well as an educational experience. At holy places such as the Kurjey Lhakhang Monastery the group will receive an initiation and empowerment from His Holiness the 10th Tuskey Rimpoche, and make Tsho offerings of butter lamps and prayers. Philosophical discussions with Buddhist monks will cover such topics as the relationship of cause and effect, emptiness and karma.

Under a full November moon the group will attend the grand Jambay Lhakhang Festival, famous for its masked Bhutanese dancers, blessing ceremonies and fire dances. Another highlight of the itinerary is a two-hour trek by foot or pony to the "Tiger's Nest Monastery" of Taktshang. Hanging precariously on the edge of a 10,200-foot cliff, the site is said to have been visited by Guru Rimpche who flew there on the back of a tigress.

Visits to markets, museums and a traditional arts and crafts institute are included, as well as daily photographic instructions and constructive critiquing sessions.

This November 10 - 20, 2008 program is offered by Sacred Earth Journeys of Vancouver. "It is an experience to help people see and capture the world through new eyes," said Helen Tomei, president of Sacred Earth Journeys. "Whether you are an adept photographer, a photography enthusiast or a spiritual seeker, it will help open your heart and spirit."

Jaime Kowal specializes in global travel photography and authentic portraiture. Among the celebrities, artists, musicians and political leaders she has photographed are His Holiness The Dalai Lama and Goldie Hawn.
