| Financial Crises, Capitalism and some sober Second Thoughts: Part III by Horace Carby-Samuels, Economist
Respective humans take a personally channelled mind-linked private focus on what they want to do with their lives as mind-guided entities. In contrast, the capitalist socialization conditions persons to see themselves as being but one entity, who is a member of a statistical class of entities, that is like all other humans, in the process of seeking to acquire maximum private net financial-equivalent results, from available opportunities for trade and exchange. In the world of myriad entities that interface to form an environment, the reality of being human, is all about a particular biological unit. Furthermore, the human (unit) is an entity that has a private mind-directed view, on the type of perpetuity which its direct or indirect effort and time-use commitments (on an autonomously evolving natural environment), will aim to support. It is therefore disingenuous and inappropriate for the capitalist-promoted educational system, to set out to distract persons from the validity of their having a private (existential) perspective on what their living is all about. Notably, the capitalist-sponsored educational system, propagandizes persons into having a financial-centred group-think, and also to accept the scientific quaintness of their having a private existential perspective on the substance of their existence. Accordingly, they are formally and informally conditioned to see the reality to which their living should contribute, in financial-centred, rather than in existential-centred terms. That system of education and socialization, aims to lead persons to see themselves, not as free individuals, but as merely being respective members of (social and statistical) groups. The imputation is that the disposition and commitment of persons who have been conditioned to that scientifically legitimated perspective on their resource and to effort management, may then be appropriately statistically recorded and analysed, so as to make predictions from central tendencies, that their imputed scientifically appropriate resource allocative responses show. From that scenario, the capitalist propaganda system aims to lead existentially unwary persons away from a focus on the mind-guided human-centred results of their efforts. Instead, the capitalist sponsored educational and socialization system, aims to get humans to accept that the supreme objective (scientific) results from the resource and time management efforts on their natural environment into which they enter, is indicated by “bread”-linked quantities, which are stated in financial/market value terms. Yet, support toward enhancing the quality-of-human-living, as an exercise in Consciousness enhancement through mind-guided operations, with the aim to achieve an awareness-linked survival, is what human resource management is all about. Therefore, especially in a reality which recognizes that “Man does Not Live by Bread Alone”, the behavioural and resource allocative nuances, which the cosmological reality of mind brings to the time-use management commitments that comprise living, may not be overlooked. Indeed, the mix of activities that respective persons select, betrays the adjustments in their living which they want to execute. For example, they may want to operate as complements in the sentience domain which prevails; or they may see their environment, as being merely comprised of respective types of material that are there to be exploited so as to secure private financial gains. The exercise of living in which people engage themselves, is therefore not primarily about (the size of the success of) their opportunity to be consumers of “bread”. Rather, in the living that persons (as mind-guided sentience-possessing entities) respectively do, the type of survival to which they are committed, invests them with attendant opportunities as well as responsibilities. For example, persons who accept that their existence comprises an integral part of the remainder of the natural environment, will also conclude that they need to find ways to pursue and to achieve a sense of mutuality with the remainder of the prevailing sentience domain. As a result, such persons will accept that they will need to develop a willingness to execute communication, across the sentience domain in which they share. Clearly, such a mutuality-centred and sentience-linked responsibility on the part of persons, is in direct contrast with the “Thy-may, look out for thy-self” mantra, which is behind the capitalist implicit propagandizing, about the competition norms out of which individuals must interact with their environment, to arrive at financial success. Conscious humans intuitively recognize that chasing after “bread” (in the form of financial capabilities), is not what living is all about. It is therefore easy for such persons to accept that we also live in a shared world, where they need to respectively resolve how they will appreciate, comprehend, and accommodate to, that extended sentience in which they share (as mind-guided entities). Accordingly, mindful of those responsibilities which are associated with their time-use management commitments, Conscious persons have each, historically, also sought to resolve for themselves, questions such as: What will they elect to communicate about, in that sentience collegiality to which they aspire? What emphases will they respectively give to the practice of mutuality as compared with that of exploitation, as they pursue their lives? and What are the types of results from their efforts, which they will use to give focus and meaning to the activities in which they engage themselves, (as they go about pursuing their survival)? In short, What activities and flow of events they will they rely on, to confirm the quality-of-life to which they have access? Analysts of economic development are therefore required to recognize that mind-guided persons primarily seek access in support of their survival priorities. Therefore, emphasis on the delivery of more (financial-equivalent) “bread” from their resource management operations, is neither the only nor the principal requirement to success that they seek to secure. However, it is true that in technically complex societies, the survival of persons is forthcoming from their access to goods and services, that have been produced in concert with the variety of technical outputs that division of labour, and that variety of raw material and of skills, have made accessible via trade. To execute the needed trading operations smoothly, persons will respectively need to draw on the facility of money, in payment for the traded services which they will use, in support of their survival. By virtue of that background, therefore, via formal and informal education practices, capitalist doctrine has propagandized persons to see capitalist/market-assigned financial quantities, as portraying what persons should regard as being valuable. Therefore, as an extension of that context, capitalism has also generated/created market value, in the form of a plethora of pieces of (greed and speculation-facilitating) “commercial” paper, that is now (in the late summer of 2008) causing a heck of a lot of appreciational and adjustment problems.
A monetary value (called “rights” that have been politically legitimated) is formulated or assigned to the piece of created commercial paper, as if it is also an environment-supplied survival supportive resource. These created “rights”, can then generate flows of speculative “market” profits, when, (in the name of “investment”) ownership rights to the respective pieces of created commercial paper are transferred for money, among profit and greed motivated potential holders, (labelled as “investors”), who aim principally to acquire more money/“bread”. However, there remains the access of persons to survival-supportive mind-centred features that are associated with their access to a high quality-of-living, which arises as sought patterns of time-use opportunities, (within the evolution of their natural environment). That issue, regarding what measured economic management output must reveal, was addressed in Horace Carby-Samuels, (2006) Quality of Living and Human Development as the Outcome From Economic Progress; (Ottawa, Agora Publishing Consortium). Additionally, a more incisive focus, is presented in the (October, 16, 2007) essay entitled “An Invitation to the Fellowship of Mind”; that was published online in The Canadian Newspaper. This latter essay, accommodates to the cosmic reality of mind as it orients the time and resource commitments which human economic agents do.
