Avoiding Societal Economic Disaster requires a new way of thinking

by John Stokes

  In Greed We Trust

Government have sought to convince "the masses" that bailing out the very elites that spawned the world wide 'economic crises' is vital. However, the book entitled Quality-of-Living and Human Development by Horace Carby-Samuels, suggests that what is needed is a new way of thinking about the nature of an 'economy', and specifically about what constitutes 'development' in an economy.

The prevailing economic crises was precipitated in part, through predatory lending practices, in an economy that has often been referred to by members of the environmental movement as 'unsustainable', and also exploitative.

In the prevailing economy the principle of human rights is disregarded, and nature is conceived of little more than as providing raw materials that can eb worked for commercial profit. The result is a substantively declining human quality of living. In this type of milieu, a facade of material prosperity is created in concert with worsening human misery. Wars, like the Iraq War, to secure depleting resources as the result of wasteful materialistic consumption practices, and that support the drive for insatiable commercial profit among elites, become simply the cost of 'doing business'.

The book entitled Quality-of-Living and Human Development challenges individuals to conceive of an economy not simply in the "market" context of capitalism, but as interconnected humans living in communities. In such an economy, people are not "objectified" as "consumers", but are affirmed as sentient and social beings, who seek to constructively and mutually affirm their quality-of-survival. The worsening poverty, and malaise of human spirituality that is accompanying the economic crises, (that include growing soup kitchen line-ups and tent cities in America), further exposes the social injustices that are associated with an economy is that guided by capitalist doctrine.

The U.S. Congressional bailout, specifically appears to have been based on some kind of capitalist-inspired Reaganomics model, that envisions benefits to the American people will "trickle down" from the elites. But, as Naomi Klein suggests, what is needed is a fundamental overhaul and rethinking of the economic system, and which liberates society from crony-inspired capitalism.

The book entitled Quality-of-Living and Human Development is a very thorough and watershed book, that ought to be read and shared by any researcher, investigative journalist, scholar, student and other people who seek to explore a new way of thinking that can prevent an apparent economic time-bomb, which could take America (along with other economies) into an economic abyss. This context for an economic abyss is the result of the financial profits of elites becoming more important that the vital ethical consideration for the lives and also accompanying rights, of people, as members of socially responsible societies.
