| Global Warming and dangers of a premature Ice Age by EV World.Com
"Why is Europe warm, when Alaska is not?" asked progressive radio talk show host, Thom Hartmann. recently? As a respected author and political commentator, Hartmann posed the question to highlight the fact that parts of Alaska, Labrador and Northern Europe are at the same latitude, yet have remarkably different climates. The answer, of course, is the Gulf Stream, originally identified, claims Hartmann, by Benjamin Franklin on one of his many sailing voyages across the North Atlantic ocean. Trailing the newly invented mercury thermometer, the irrepressible inventor, entrepreneur and political sage, detected the "river" of warm, tropical waters that flow up the east coast of North America and across to Europe, helping temper what would otherwise be a subarctic environment. As the map above illustrates, and as Hartmann explains in his revised edition of "The Last Hours of Ancient Sunlight" -- due out later this year -- what we call the Gulf Stream actually begins its journey in the Pacific Ocean where solar heating causes it to begin a 1,000 year journey that ends off the coast of Greenland, before starting its long trek back towards the Pacific.
It is this ocean thermohaline circulation that helps to more evenly distribute the heat of the planet, allowing Europe to enjoy a climate that is closer to that of Oregon and Washington than Alaska or Labrador. But as Hartmann and others warn, including a recently released Pentagon study, the mechanism that helps warm Europe may be in danger of breaking down, ironically because of global warming. By accelerating the warming of the planet through the burning of fossil fuels, we may actually initiate a modern Ice Age and the first to suffer will be Britain and Northern Europe.
