| Syria's Arab Allegiance and Genocide in Darfur by Kirk Duffin During the early period of African colonization, the Arab population, of North Africa, considered non-Arab Africans to be objects of worth. For example, Arab traders collected Saharan and sub-Saharan Africans to trade to slave vessels, heading to Europe and North America to supply rural and urban industry with inexpensive - free - labour. This antecedent period of Arab indifference, and antipathy, towards non-Arab peoples is still present in our era vis-à-vis Arab governments. As the Kuwait News Agency reported, Syrian and Sudan, besides aligning on the Gaza conflict, have forged an alliance regarding the crisis in Darfur. Omar al-Bashir, the President Sudan, has been assured by his foreign counterpart, Bashar al-Assad, that the government of Syria supports Sudan amidst pressure from the international community to the end the genocide and human rights abuses taking place in Western Sudan, as it is a threat to Arabs as a whole.
As per an Arab interpretation, Bashar as-Assad asserts that the International criminal court (ICC) is attempting to interfere with the internal policy of a sovereign nation, which amounts to neo-colonialism aimed at usurping control from the Arab-centric government of Sudan, since it is about to issue an arrest warrant for Omar al-Bashir resulting from the crimes perpetrated within Darfur, mainly war crimes and genocide. The United Nations and the ICC needs to address the position taken by Syria. The international community should hold Syria accountable, be it physical or judicial -- to establish what happens when a nation holds adherence to an Arab nation, committing or tacitly sponsoring ethnic cleansing.
