| NDP critic sends “Made in China” maple leaf pins back to Conservatives Conservative government ships Canadian jobs overseas Special to The Canadian OTTAWA – The Conservative government has outsourced the manufacturing of maple leaf pins to China. The latest shipment of maple leaf lapel pins to Parliamentary offices has arrived with ‘Made in China’ product labels. New Democrat Heritage Critic Charlie Angus (Timmins-James Bay) says he’s outraged that taxpayers’ dollars are being used to outsource Canadian symbols – such as the maple leaf – overseas. “The maple leaf is not simply a political masthead, it’s the symbol of what we as Canadians value and aspire to,” said Angus. “In the face of the biggest manufacturing meltdown in Canadian history, the Conservatives have decided to peddle maple leaf pins that have been made in China. There’s not a Canadian from coast-to-coast-to-coast that would support this decision.” In 2005, Angus led a fight that stopped the Liberal government from outsourcing the production of Canadian lapel pins to China. Angus says it’s unacceptable that the Conservative government is repeating the Liberals mistake. “The maple leaf pin was manufactured by Canadian companies for decades. Now those jobs have been shipped overseas. As our manufacturing heartland has been gutted, the Conservatives have the nerve to use taxpayers’ dollars to peddle ‘Made in China’ pins to the hundreds of thousands of Canadians who have lost their jobs. The symbolism of these Cadillac Conservatives couldn’t be clearer.” Angus is refusing to hand out ‘Made in China’ pins in his constituency offices.
