Red Woman with Backward Eyes and other Stories
by MariJo Moore, ISBN: 0965492176
General description: Unlike other writers inside and outside aboriginal
communities, who seem predisposed to retreat to the
past in order to give the reader a romanticized view
of Native life, Ms. Moore confronts the very real
social issues of alcohol abuse and familial
dysfunction, as it relates to the poverty with which
many present day aboriginal communities must deal.
Most of the eleven short stories included in the
collection have the first person spiritual connection
to the characters in conflict. It is as if Ms. Moore
has reached inward into her own personal experiences
and gathered readers to he storytelling table.
This is a collection of stories intertwining many
characters and events that have some connection to the
Cherokee culture or reservation. Many social issues
are dealt with... but they are merely props
so-to-speak, to help the readers see the real subject
which is the strength of Cherokee women.
