Canadian Television: The End Is Near for Flash Point

After five exciting seasons the Canadian cop drama Flash Point is nearing its series finale. The show, which debuted in July of 2008, follows members of an elite squad of police officers known as the Strategic Response Unit. These specially trained officers are called into action whenever a dangerous situation has reached a crisis point. Although the team stresses negotiation as its preferred method in which to resolve a potentially deadly situation this is often not possible. When all other efforts have failed this highly skilled and heavily armed unit must use lethal force. Loyal viewers will know that Flash Point has given its audience a whole new meaning to the seemingly simple phrase, “I have the solution”.

The show was created by Mark Ellis and Stephanie Morgenstern with a mandate to make Canadian content a priority. In fact all of the principal actors including Hugh Dillon, Enrico Colantoni, and David Paetkau are fellow Canucks. The only American among the lead cast is actress Amy Jo Johnson.

Flash Point is filmed on location in Toronto and from season to season the city has become increasingly more prominent in terms of its role in the series. Familiar landmarks such as the CN Tower and York University as well as various local street names have been featured as elements within the milieu of the show.

Although Flash Point is centered on the professional and personal lives of its main characters episodes of the show have also dealt with an array of weighty social issues. Plot lines have included stories involving bullying, various types of abuse, mental illness, issues of sexual orientation etc.
