Modified footwear can help tender toes

(NC) -- The toes may be one of our smallest limbs but when they are tender or deformed they can cause a lot of discomfort. Regular shoes can often be very painful.

“We can ease the discomfort caused by many foot and lower limb conditions by making custom foot orthotics and recommending better fitting, supportive footwear,” says Lisa Irish, a Canadian Certified Pedorthist and president of the Pedorthic Association of Canada. Canadian Certified Pedorthists are the only foot experts trained in the modification of footwear. “In certain instances, such as painful toes, mallet, claw or hammer toes, modified shoes are the only way we can provide comfort.”

Worn as everyday footwear, modified shoes are professionally altered by a Canadian Certified Pedorthist to perfectly fit an individual's feet, and to accommodate their foot condition. Modified shoes may only have one custom adjustment or they may feature several alterations. To the untrained eye, modified shoes look like regular footwear as usually the modifications are hidden within or beneath the shoe.

To accommodate painful, deformed toes, pedorthists often stretch or excavate an area of the shoe to reduce pressure on sensitive areas. However there are a range of modifications they can make including adding rocker, or curved soles to reduce stress, spot stretch shoe over painful toes, widen the sole for deformities, and reinforcing areas of the shoe that get extra wear.

Foot care tips

To reduce the pain caused by tender toes, make an appointment with a Canadian Certified Pedorthist. This professional will:

• Conduct a thorough exam of your feet and lower limbs.

•Advise you if a custom-made foot orthotic will help reduce pain and pressure on specific areas of your foot.

• Help you select footwear with a wide, deep, roomy toe box without stitching, which will give your toes plenty of room without the irritation of seams.

• Stretch the upper of the shoe where toes may rub on the shoe material

• Add toe spacers or padding to protect painful corns and calluses.

• Widen your shoes' base of support to stop your foot from distorting the shoe.

• Reinforce or strengthen areas of your shoes that are wearing prematurely.
