Toronto: Cabaret Company presents Dancing Queen - Sky Gilbert

The Cabaret Company presents the World Premiere of DANCING QUEEN, a ground-breaking new play written and directed by Sky Gilbert, at Buddies in Bad Times Theatre from April 18-29, 2012 (Opening April 19th). An innovative melding of theatre and dance, DANCING QUEEN tells the poignant story of an intergenerational double love triangle, and poses scandalous questions about sex, love and monogamy. Tickets are available via the Box Office at 416-975-8555 and online via T.O.Tix/Ticketweb.

Alan is a beautiful and angry young man who moves to the big city and falls in love with Bart, a sought-after, misanthropic older man. In turn, Alan captivates Calder, a successful author who struggles with his feelings for the younger man. DANCING QUEEN offers a glimpse into the complex world of gay romance - an honest, self-aware and unflinching portrayal of gay grand passion laced with poignant and heart-wrenching humour.

DANCING QUEEN features compelling newcomer Nick Green (Hamilton Bus Stop, Hammer Theatre; Frankenstein, Catalyst Theatre/Canadian Stage), alongside Dora winner and Gemini nominee Ryan Kelly (The Normal Heart, Studio 180; I Have AIDS and Will the Real JT LeRoy Please Stand Up?, Cabaret Company; Queer As Folk, Showtime), and Dora and Canadian Comedy award-nominated writer/performer David-Benjamin Tomlinson (Memoirs From Cracktown, Wingéd, and Sunstroke: Icarus Speaks; Rope Enough, Cabaret Company).

Choreographed by notorious performance artist (and Dora nominee) Keith Cole, in collaboration with Dora winning playwright/director Sky Gilbert, DANCING QUEEN features a series of remarkable dance sequences performed by Green, Kelly, and Tomlinson. These ‘poems in movement’ exploring gay male love are juxtaposed with a series of slice-of-life scenes relating the events of the story. DANCING QUEEN’s dance interludes express the hopes, fears, dreams and feelings of the characters - funny/serious/laughing/yearning male ballets that speak unabashedly about male romance.

Lighting and Set design is by multimedia designer and six-time Dora nominee Andy Moro (Red Pepper Spectacle Arts, VideoCabaret, Factory Theatre, Buddies in Bad Times). Costume design is by Sheree Tams (The Situationists, Will the Real JT LeRoy Please Stand Up?, Cabaret Company; Slavery, UK National Tour, Tara Arts).

The Cabaret Company was founded in 1997 after Sky Gilbert stepped down after 18 years as Founding Artistic Director of Buddies in Bad Times Theatre. The Cabaret Company has received a total of nineteen Dora Nominations and encourages the work and development of queer theatrical newcomers.  Artistic Director Sky Gilbert is a writer, director, professor and drag queen extraordinaire. Most recently, his play The Situationists won the 2011 Dora for Outstanding New Play.
