Ottawa: Arts and Entertainment weekend round-up

Canada's Independent Yellow Pages

The Bronson Centre is a happening place this weekend, people – the Joel Plaskett Emergency and Frank Turner tonight, and Measha Brueggergosman Friday night – both shows that promise to bring it. Tonight you can also get your punk/hardcore fix with Dayglo Abortions and EndPrograms at Mavericks, while jazz aficionados can hear inspirations from Dave Frishberg’s songs. Also? The Wooden Sky is out at the Black Sheep – their indie rockings are well worth the trek out there. Rawbeat rockers StillNative will stop by The Daily Grind on Friday, while there will be music and visuals going on down the street with Slam Pitch at Shanghai. Grassroots lovers will congregate at the Legion for the newest festival to join our fest-lineup, although this might be the first festival to have ukulele singalongs. Mathias Horn, a trippin’ ukulele player, will bring out his alter-ego The Burning Hell at the Black Sheep Saturday night. Down in the merket, Ceremony makes its long-awaited dance-party return to Mugshots, featuring some of Ottawa’s best DJ talent.

We’ve also got Ottawa Startup Weekend – if you’ve been dreaming about a new venture, this is the spot to test it and perfect it. Pretty dresses will abound at Victoire on Saturday with their annual Spring Fling Vintage sale, and you can put those dresses to good use right away at the Daffodil Gala that night.

Crafters who feel like their stash needs some livening up should head to the CURIOUS Launch and Exchange at Raw Sugar on Friday, where you can swap supplies and meet up with other kindred spirits. If you’re more into getting your hands dirty, this propagation workshop is right up your alley.

The Where the Wild Things…Aren’t? show continues at WallSpace, with author, poet and curator John K Grande sharing his perspectives on the show tonight. Film buffs who are also proud Gee Gee fans should head to Kichesippi Brewery Saturday for a screening of Garnet & Grey, a documentary of the 2011 football team. You can see two shows in one sitting with Evolution Theatre’s double bill, down at the Arts Court Theatre until Saturday.
