Taxpayers get help

(NC) -- Have you been looking for a simple way to make a difference in your neighbourhood? Community organizations are searching for people just like you to become a tax clinic volunteer so you can assist others.

The Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP) helps individuals and families with modest incomes prepare their income tax and benefit returns. It's an initiative that has been supported by the Canada Revenue Agency for more than 40 years. In 2013, CVITP volunteers filed more than 500,000 tax returns, helping eligible individuals receive the credits and benefits to which they are entitled.

You do not need to be a tax expert to lend a hand. All you need is a basic understanding of income tax, and to be affiliated with a community organization or association. The CRA provides the tax software and training you need. The volunteer registration period runs from October through January of each year. Last year, over 18,000 devoted individuals across the country contributed to this worthy cause.

More information is available online at www.cra.gc.ca/volunteer or toll-free at 1-800-959-8281.
