Tax assistance can make a difference in your community

(NC) -- Did you know that there are families of modest income in your neighbourhood who are missing out on beneficial tax credits? This is why so many community associations provide a free service to help them complete their income tax and benefit returns.

If you're part of a local community centre, a seniors association, a religious organization, a cultural club, or any other community-based association, you can volunteer to help. Through your organization you can participate in this year's Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP) and help individuals and families with modest incomes either access or continue to receive their credits and benefit payments.

Volunteer organizations and the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) have been working together for the past 40 years to help eligible individuals across the country that are unable to prepare their income tax and benefit return on their own. Participating organizations lend their facilities and host tax preparation clinics during tax filing season. Volunteers from these organizations can sign up through the CRA to be a tax volunteer and the CRA will provide them with the appropriate tools and training to get them started.

In 2013, over 18,000 volunteers belonging to over 2,000 organizations participated in the program. Together, they filed more than 500,000 tax returns for people in their communities.

Registration for community organizations runs year-round, so it's never too early or too late to join. More information is available online at www.cra.gc.ca/volunteer or toll-free at 1-800-959-8281.
