Conservative MPs under investigation by Elections Canada

The Prime Minister must wish he could just bury his head in the sand lately, due to all the scandals plaguing his government- from the Mike Duffy expense scandal, to the missing three billion dollars. On this addition of ‘Conservative MPs behaving badly’ two Manitoba MPs have been suspended due to a discrepancy over election expenses.

The MP’s- Shelly Glover and James Bezan say they will go to court over accusations that there were problems with the MPs returns, which was first noticed by an Elections Canada auditor months ago, and the MP’s in question were actually notified about the issue, however their campaigns decided not to make any changes, according to a June 4th Globe and Mail article. A representative for Elections Canada- John Enright discussed where the case stood currently.

“In these cases, the chief electoral officer wrote to the Speaker of the House to inform the House of the situation so that appropriate action could be taken,” he said. “That’s where we are.”

Enright says the Elections Act is clear: “An elected candidate, a sitting MP, who fails to make a correction requested by the CEO shall not continue to sit or vote as a member until the correction is made, said Enright.

In response, one of the MPs in question- Shelly Glover has claimed that the allegations against her by Elections Canada are false, and that her expenses were indeed approved by Elections Canada in 2006 and 2008, and that Elections Canada are now simply interpreting the Act in a different way.

“Elections Canada approved my campaign returns for the 2006 and 2008 elections but have now changed their interpretation, which is not consistent with the Act’s provisions,” he said.

Whatever the ruling may be, this specific case is a microcosm of the corruption and mismanagement that is going on in Parliament currently. How many scandals before the Canadian people collectively shout ‘enough is enough’?
