MARKHAM (CNW) -- Hyundai Auto Canada Corp. announced today that it sold 9,266 vehicles in February, representing a 6.5% increase over the same month in 2011. The February result caps a month where the Hyundai Elantra won Canadian Car of the Year award from the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC), the company saw its 38th consecutive month of year-over-year sales growth and the best-ever February in company history.

"February certainly yielded a number of major milestones for Hyundai," said Steve Kelleher, President and CEO of Hyundai Auto Canada Corp. "Not only did we set a new sales record for the month, but we extended our growth streak and won Canadian Car of the Year with our most important product - the Elantra. It's hard to imagine how it could have gone any better."

Year-to-date, Hyundai has sold 16,726 vehicles in the first two months of 2012, representing a 8.7% increase over the same period last year.

On top of the Elantra's Car of the Year win, AJAC also announced that the Hyundai Veloster 3-door coupe won its Best New Design award. Both awards were handed out February 16 at the Canadian International Auto Show in Toronto.

In February, Hyundai vehicles consuming less than 5.0 L/100 km represented 48% of total sales. The Sonata Hybrid intermediate sedan, Elantra compact sedan, Accent subcompact, and Veloster 3-door coupe consume fuel at a respective rate of just 4.6, 4.9, 4.8 and 4.9 L/100km on the highway.
