Kenya: Death in the Plains of Tana

It was as if a dry spell had changed into an ugly scene of blood. Down the valleys of Tana River, the drying sketchy grasses pillowed with human flesh, nastily destroyed by the heartlessness of the raiders. Far beyond the mountains, mourning was now descending into the village, bringing in with it a huge agony of the butchered villagers.

The desperation illuminated through the terrain where death had earlier visited.  Turning back towards the deserted village, I found a new born baby suckling her already death mother. And more agonizing scenes only told us one thing – the village had been planted with a scar that only mellows into the hearts of everyone, everybody and every single person who understood the death toll.

When the military forces arrived, burning huts were all that was left. The bandits had disappeared leaving the entire village in anguish. The tragedy was overwhelmingly astonishing and the Kenyan government response was not fast enough to prevent the attack.
