Ottawa daycare: An unusual way to make children take a nap

.

It can be quite hectic working with children especially when they are all together. These little people are always over excited, playful and moving about that sometimes it can be difficult to make them do something especially when you want them to get to sleep. Getting them to focus on one thing can give you headache but as much as you would wish there were ways to make them take a nap a masking tape should never cross your mind. Very sad this was not the case in Ottawa daycare where a parent complained that the kids in the daycare were being forced to take a nap by taping them to their cots. Two employees in the daycare lost their jobs.

At the Bayview Public School daycare three or four children from senior kindergarten were taped to their cots to make them settle down for their afternoon nap. This was a statement made by the president of the board of Ottawa School Day Nursery Inc, Deborah Cooper.

According to claims by one parent the children were also taped on their mouths but this is not yet clear. The children may have been taped to their cots on this one occasion but it’s not clear whether it has happened any other time.  No injuries were reported though. After complains by the parent, an investigation was launched which led to the suspension of two employees who were later fired.

Through a private message board the parents were informed of the incident by the board but a few parents complained of not being aware of the incident. The parents spoke to the media and complained about the matter being not investigated by the Ottawa police and this resulted into the Children’s Aid society being contacted and still no action has been taken regarding the matter.

The College of Early Childhood Educators has the mandate to conduct a hearing and any licensed childhood educators found guilty of an offense can be stripped off their credentials. This is according to the Ottawa Citizen notes that said at least one of the parents filed a complaint with the organization. Such offenses are like failure to maintain the appropriate standard of profession, abusing any child under member’s professional supervision either physically, verbally, emotionally, sexually or psychologically. Failure to provide enough supervision on persons that are under professional supervision of the member and failure to act or acting a way that would be reasonably regarded as disgraceful, unprofessional or dishonorable by the members having regard to the circumstances is also punishable.

There would be no justice if after the investigation in this case one rule is not found to have been broken; failure to maintain standard of profession.
