Canada Day and cottages: that sums up many an Ottawan’s weekend plans. Of course, for those of you staying the city this long weekend, the first option will be hard to miss. The usual craziness will take place around Parliament Hill, with Feist, Simple Plan and many more giving free shows. Major Hill and Jacques-Cartier parks will also be hopping, as well as several museums (click here for a full list) . You can also catch some free shows as part of JazzFest. There’ll also be a Canada Day event for almost every community and you can find all the details on OttawaStart. Zaphod’s also got it’s 20th Annual Canada Day party, if you don’t want to attend one of the government-sanctioned festivities.

But Ottawa can not live on Canada Day alone. There is more to do this weekend then contemplate the beauty of the maple leaf.

Today from 3-6, the CBC will be hosting a play day on Sparks Street, where the mall will be opened up to skipping, hopscotch, giant boardgames and more! Why can’t every day be play day?

If you’re up for a little dance party, you might want to check out Party Pack on Friday at Ritual, or Shameless at Babylon (check out their nasty poster). On Saturday, there’s a “patriotic” Grind at Babylon with Team Canada DJs. Ceremony‘s back on Saturday, but this time at St Brigid’s.

The Escapade Music Festival - now at Ottawa Stadium -  is taking place from June 30-July 1st. The festival’s now in its 3rd year brings some of the best musicians from the electronic music scene to the NCR. On a much smaller scale,  Chicago’s Hollows are coming to rock out the Capital Rehearsal space on Friday night. They’ll be joined by Boyhood who will be releasing their debut tape EP.

For the curious, there’s not one but two burlesque shows happening. Friday evening at the Rainbow Bistro Bourbon&Spice and Browncoats Burlesque, with special guests Bella Barecatt, Meena Jatrois and Kitty Kin-Evil, will bring you to the movies as they reenact scenes from your favourite movies. On Saturday, Capital Tease presents Back to the Grind at Mavericks. There’s also some sassy Saturday Night Drag and the weekly date with China Doll for drag queen karaoke.

Fashionistas, the next edition of Flaunt is taking place on Friday at 7pm. This special Flaunt is taking place on the roof of the National Arts Centre and will be an opportunity to shop the most fabulous independent Canadian designer fashions and accessories.

For those interested in learning, the Museum of Nature will be offering free admission on Canada Day. The Ottawa Small Press Book Fair is taking place on June 30 at the Jack Purcell Community Centre.

Peter ‘N Chris were a popular feature of the last few Fringe Fest, but unfortunately didn’t make it this time around. To make up for it they are having a show today! Guaranteed good time.
