Turn holiday demands into holiday dazzle

(NC) --  Is it time for a change?

With all the hustle and bustle of the holidays, it's sometimes difficult to take a breather and just have fun with your family. Between parties, school concerts and last minute shopping, family time is often spent sitting in the car together, shuttling from one place to the next. This year, why not take time to enjoy the memories you are making? Here's how:

Make breakfast time family time. Rather than rushing through your first meal of the day to get on to your next appointment, schedule your first activity a little later in the morning. That way, breakfast can be the perfect time for the family to spend together. But don't let mom do all the work. Get everyone to pitch in by setting the table, making the food, and serving it. Try a simple recipe like Nutella fruit skewers. Young kids like to imitate what they see their parents do, and older kids can help with recipe preparation. Check out nutella.ca/recipes for fun, delicious and easy to make breakfast ideas that kids will eat up.

Don't over-schedule. Sure, kids need to be kept busy, but make sure to leave at least a few days open to have unplanned fun. Some of the best memories of childhood are created with a little spontaneity. This could include an impulsive family trip to a neighbourhood skating rink, a backyard snowball fight or an afternoon sipping hot cocoa and watching your favourite seasonal movies. Don't let a new snow fall go to waste. It's the perfect time to make a snowman or to go tobogganing. After all, what are the holidays for, if not a little surprise and delight?

Keep track of your memories.Don't let the holidays fly by without savouring and treasuring the moments. Get each family member to collect one thing – a favourite recipe, a story about something that happened, a ticket stub, a photo – about the holiday and add it to a scrapbook. Not only will it encourage you to reflect on the season that you're in, it will be fun to look back on it next year.
