Ottawa Food Truck Rally takes place this weekend

The City of Ottawa launched a new street vending program earlier this year and now food trucks of all varieties can be found in the city adding to a tastier landscape of quick eats. If you’ve been dying to try one of the food trucks, including those that are not located in your corner of town, this Saturday, September 28 is your opportunity.  In the spirit of community and food, eleven of the trucks will gather at the corner of Norman and Pamilla Streets in Little Italy for the first Ottawa Food Truck Rally.

Attendees will have a chance to try foods from eleven food truck vendors and vote for their favourites – all for a good cause! The Ottawa Community Housing (OCH) Foundation , is a new charitable organization whose mandate is to empower their tenants, of which there are 32,000 across the city.  Proceeds from the truck rally will enable the foundation to grant a scholarship to one of its tenants to attend  the Algonquin College School of Culinary Arts. In fact, the OCH Foundation is hoping the event will enable them to grant two scholarships, as the Bank of Montreal has already committed $5000 toward the scholarship before the event even happens. Domicile is another sponsor of the rally.

Scholarships of this type widen the breadth of opportunity for tenants of social housing who may not fit into the traditional post-secondary educational paths set out in our society, ” says Wendy Mitchell, Executive Director of the OCH Foundation. “Plus, this opportunity has a much more direct possibility of leading to immediate employment.”

Apartment613 had an exclusive first look at the trophy (designed by The Federal) for the truck that gets the most votes. Mr. Churritos; Urban Cowboy; The Grilled Cheeserie; The Merry Dairy; Olive Green; Angry Drogonz; Chow Down; Bytown Bayou and Red Roaster; Pizza e Pannini will be fighting for it.

Drinks will be provided by local vendors Kitchesippi Beer Company, the Clocktower Brew Pub, Hoity Toity Cellars and Harvey and Vern’s.

Tim Van Dyke of Think Lunch is really looking forward to having his hand-painted truck there. “It will be great to have all the trucks in one place, he said.”

Sharif Virani, founder of the Ottawa Food Truck Rally says that the idea of the rally is to showcase creativity and dedication of local food trucks. “The end goal of the rally is to inspire two young individuals and help them realize their potential to try and succeed at doing something special in Ottawa.”

The Ottawa Food Truck Rally will take place at Norman and Pamilla Streets in the Heart of Little Italy between 12 and 4 p.m. on Saturday, September 28. Tickets are $10 and have been selling very quickly. Buying them in advance is recommended. Kids under 12 can enter for free. Tasting plates vary in price. To purchase tickets, click here.
