Food Allergies: Help children in the lunchroom

(NC) -- For parents, most back-to-school routines add the nightly task of deciding what to prepare for their kids' lunchbox.

More than ever before, parents and caregivers are searching for solutions to help their own children afflicted with food allergies or gluten sensitivities, or to make sure the lunchroom is safe for other children with similar health concerns.

Four–out-of-five accidental exposures occur away from home, according to the Canadian Anaphylaxis Initiative, with about 7 per cent of the Canadian population (or 2.4 million people) now dealing with this heightened health issue, cites Health Canada. And about 300,000 Canadian children have food allergies, according to Anaphylaxis Canada. Further to this, about one in every 100 of us has celiac disease and must avoid gluten.

In response to these concerns, an Ontario-based food company has recently expanded its line of deli meats that are known for their taste, high quality, and natural ingredients. Great for lunches, this brand is also free of gluten and all other major food allergens, including milk, peanuts, tree nuts, mustard, sesame, egg, fish, soy and sulphites without compromising on great taste.

“The response to our launch of the Piller's Simply Free line last year was phenomenal,” says Rita Weigel, the company's director of marketing. “We have received many letters from parents thanking us for providing delicious products that the whole family can enjoy with peace of mind that their kids can eat safely. So, now we have expanded the Piller's Simply Free line (available at all large retailers) to include more varieties of sliced meats, wieners, sausage and ham as well as fully cooked breakfast options.”
