Diet Soft Drinks, Sodas can cause leukemia and lymphoma

We all love a can of soda on a regular basis, and for some of us, these fizzy pop drinks have become a constant source of rehydration. This is even more so the case when you consider that very few of us have energy levels or time to plan healthy meals and drinks for the day, and it has become increasingly easier to run to the store and grab a can of drink with caffeine, not only for the purpose of rehydration, but also to keep our energy levels high.

Recent studies, however, have suggested that drinking just one can of diet soda per day can massively increase your chances of getting certain medical conditions. The men have been said to have an increased risk of getting non-Hodgkin lymphoma as well as multiple myeloma, and women have been said to have an increased risk of leukemia. The study of diet drinks has been ongoing for many years, but this is one of the most in-depth studies on the subject, and the results that have been released are incredibly shocking.

The study took into account the results of over 77,000 women, and almost 50,000 men and in total, gave scientists over two million people-years worth of data. As well as being the largest study with regards to people numbers, this one has also shown to be the most in-depth look at how the effects of diet drinks can affect people, and to be more precise, their health over the long term.

“One diet soda a day increases leukemia, multiple myeloma and non-Hodgkin lymphomas”

This was the shocking quote given by the popular website Natural news, and more investigation into the subject has shown some pretty shocking facts, which may make you think twice about reaching for that can of diet cola!

In the course of this study it was shown that one can of diet pop, equal to 355ml, per day will give men and women a 42% increased chance of getting leukemia. For the men, this daily dose of fizzy pop also leads to over 100% increased risks of getting multiple myeloma, and a 31% higher chance of getting non-Hodgkin lymphoma. According to these statistics, the males seem to have the raw end of the deal. As yet, it hasn’t been discovered why the men seem to suffer at the hands of the diet fizzy drinks more than women.

Over recent years, many experiments and studies have taken part to form a link between an ingredient found in many drinks – aspartame and growing health concerns, but as this study in particular has shown, the lack of a true link is mainly due to poor quality of research and experiments that were not lengthy enough to give definitive results. There have been studied on rats that have shown links to cancer, so the results of this study shouldn’t really come as a big surprise. The rats have also shown a link between fetal development and diet soda’s.

You would be forgiven for thinking that returning to the “normal” soda varieties as opposed to the diet ones will make a difference to your life, but in the same study, those men that drank normal soda also had a higher chance of getting the above discussed conditions – as much as 66% percent, for example, for non-Hodgkin lymphoma alone. This is actually worse than the results shown by the diet soda choices!
