Fukushima: Tritium threatens Pacific Ocean

Many underground tanks that were constructed to handle the vast amount of the groundwater run-off have developed leaks in the last few days. This has resulted in a leak of radioactive water containing tritium. This was discovered from two out of four observatory holes. Tepco has made wells to check the groundwater for leakage and it is calling these wells `observation holes’. The leaking water is gradually penetrating the ground.

Samples of tritium from two out of four observation holes were taken on 24th April. The highest reading marked was 3,800,000 Bg/m3 from the second reservoir based upon research provided by Mochuzuki who edits Fukushima-Diary.com. This level is almost the same as that of the first reservoir leak. There is suspicion that tritium may leak out of the remaining two reservoirs too.

A point may be reached when the workers are not going to be able to contain this highly radioactive waste water, which may well spread its tentacles into the Pacific Ocean.
