A lot of studies have been carried out by renowned researchers on humans and the effects that their actions have on the environment which is referred to as “Human Ecology”. In a publication by Ellen Swallow Richards, human ecology is defined as “The study of the surroundings of human beings in the effects they produce on the lives of men”. This has led to the belief that all actions of humans do have either a direct or indirect impact on the lives of others. It is for a reason like this that the behaviour shown by PhD Candidate Marcella Carby-Samuels should not be taken lightly at all.

Looking at the devastating effects left on Dezrin Carby-Samuels by her daughter Marcella Carby-Samuels and husband Horace Carby-Samuels, one is spot on right to conclude that such actions by the daughter and her father are hypocrisy in the highest order.

According to an article titled “Holocene Extinction”, the activities of humans do have a direct or indirect bearing on the extinction of species from the surface of the earth. This can be clearly seen in the case currently being discussed. The actions of Marcella and her father have led to Dezrin being rejected by even her Jamaican relatives and some members of the society where she lives. Her current condition is that of a sorry one.

The United Nations is an organization that is recognized for its desire to ensure that all the basic necessities of life like food, shelter, education and health are adequately provided for both the young and old. Therefore, whoever gets the opportunity to work for the UN is always regarded as having greater respect and love for human life. This is why it is very worrying as Marcella Carby-Samuels who once worked as a Consultant at the UN has put up a behaviour that contradicts the aims and visions of the UN. This begs the question, “How can someone who works for the UN in the midst of all their advocacies for the survival of humans especially the aged be so mean and heartless to her own mother? This clearly shows that Marcella Carby-Samuels is an individual who really practices pure hypocrisy.

Although the UN has been for a very long time now advocating for human rights all over the world, it has also added human rights of older persons to their aims and objectives. This was after it came to the conclusion that the elderly in society were having their rights trampled upon. Four main aspects were highlighted and they are; discrimination, poverty, violence and abuse. A lot of other organizations have also joined forces with the UN in helping to ensure that the elderly are well catered for in the societies that they live.

With all that the UN is doing for the elderly in the communities, it is very serious to find out that their Consultant has not only discriminated against her own aged mother but also condoned the violence and abuse meted to her mother by her father. If not a hypocrite, who else in his or her right senses and as a human would even secretly wish for his or her mother to be in such a condition of absolute helplessness?
