The elderly in societies all over the world are expected to be held in high esteem and respected by everyone. However, this happens to be not the case in Ottawa as an elderly woman by name Dezrin Carby-Samuels has been the recipient of all sorts of human abuse in the hands of her own husband and daughter. Whilst a lot of effort is being put into the campaign to see to it that Canada becomes recognized as a country where human rights laws are strictly adhered to, it comes as a surprise to find out that an elderly woman has been deprived of her basic right for years.

In the midst of all the various human rights abuses, there has been the creation of certain bodies like the Police with the sole objective of safeguarding human rights. So it remains as a pinch in the eye to realize that this same body that has been empowered to ensure that all human rights laws are functioning well have blatantly closed their eyes to the plight of Dezrin Carby Samuels. Personnel from the Ottawa Police had the chance to bring an end to the hellish life that she was being made to pass through on a daily basis by her husband and daughter but not even her words “DAD ABUSES ME” was able to jolt them back to their senses. That was even when Dezrin could still write. Now she can no longer speak, walk or even write as she has become bedridden due to the constant abuse that she has had to pass through.

The police have always been portrayed as a friend to each and every individual especially those who are oppressed but when this same institution idles around whilst turning a blind eye to the abuse of an elderly woman in Ottawa then eyebrows really need to be raised. Even if everyone should leave an elderly woman who is being abused to her fate, the police are never expected to be part of such people. However, that is the sad truth as Dezrin’s abuse has been ignored by the best institution that should have stood by her.

Charity, as the saying goes begins at home, but in this case it really looks like some personnel within the Ottawa Police Department have shown their lack of empathy even to an abused elderly woman. If the police can sit and watch whilst an elderly woman is abused then the worst should be expected for the younger ones.
