Ottawa Woman's Plight Shows Jamaican Community At Its Worst

Dezrin Carby-Samuels' plight shows the Jamaica community as totally lacking in basic social responsibility.  How could Jamaicans in Canada apparently turn and blind eye to the pain and suffering of a fellow Canadian of Jamaican background who is a retired nurse who has been such a role model in the community?

Dezrin has been subjected to continued documented abuse of her rights under a controlling husband.  In turn, this husband has been able to perpetuate that abuse under the macabre activities of Marcella Carby-Samuels who appears to sought to exploit the situation for her own gain.

Marcella's actvities has included hiring an Ottawa Police Detective to carry out her diabolical plans.  But of course, Marcella is no stranger to lies and deception because that's how she got into Sweden's Lund University for her PhD programme.

Marcella kept her maiden name, and then carried out an elaborate charade to pretend that she wasn't maried to Dr. David Tenenbaum, who assisted her efforts to register, in spite of a conflict of interest.

Marcella also orchestrated lies to police that Raymond, her brother, suffers from “mental illness”, so she could perpetuate the use of Dezrin, her Mom, in her father-in-law Dr. Jerry Tenenbaum's exploitation of her own Mom for his “scientific redearch”.

But let's get back to Dezrin, shall we?  How could Dezrin be subjected to such abuse and oppression while being in such a large extended famiy that includes her brother Fred Carby who lives in the Richmond Hill area?

That is apparently because in “middle” to “upper” class colonial-minded Jamaican culture, if something bad happens to you that “God's judgement”.  Why do you think Jamaica is so rife with poverty and corruption?  Indeed, Jamaica lacks a social safety net that can be found in so many other countries because so many Jamaicans believe that “bad things only happen to people who must have deserved it, in the eyes of God”.  That's why so many “successful” Jamaicans abroad can go only their holidays “back home” and take no notice of the so-economic plight of their fellow Jamaican's - “they must have deserved it'.

This is the draconian interpretation that Jamaica's Protestant culture has attributed to their undestanding of the Bible that is used to justify their social apathy.  Furthermore, Jamaica's traditional mysoginist and male chauvinist culture also legitimates the abuse of women "under the roof of their man".

That is why even though Fred Carby had promised his grandmother to look after Dezrin that he can then ignore her plight as so many other relatives and other people in the Jamaican community have. Mr Carby also further legitimated ignoring the plight of Dezrin with the supposed excuse that it's "Horace's house", as if Dezrin was not a co-owner of 30 Jarlan Terrance in Kanata, where Dezrin has remained virtually a prisoner of her own home.  Raymond, her son, had gotten permission from the City of Ottawa to hold a peace vigiil their so that people could send their love, but one can't expect the Jamaican community in Ottawa to be a part of the community support that Dezrin's needs.

Even though Dezrin has lived her life making sacrifies to every one around her in the true spirit of altruism which included her self-less work as a nurse, in the apperent eyes of her middle class extended family and ther Jamaicans who lack the social responsibility of so many other communities, she must have “deserved” to be betrayed and abused to the point that she can no longer walk, talk or write.
