Keep your pet healthy with these tips

(NC) — Veterinarians in a recent survey by the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association and Hill's Pet Nutrition said the top five things a pet owner can do to increase the length of their pet's life are weight control, dental care, regular checkups, regular exercise and providing age or lifestage specific nutrition.

Based on the above factors, veterinarian Dr. David Cook offers a preventive strategy for some key pet health issues:

Obesity - Feed your pet food that's formulated for their age and health-specific needs and speak to your veterinarian about the best feeding method for your pet. Also, make sure regular exercise with your pet is part of your daily routine.

Dental and related health problems - Good oral care is essential to your pet's quality and length of life by reducing inflammation that can affect the whole body. Prevention should include brushing at home and regular veterinary cleanings. It can also include a pet food formulated with fibre technology to help scrub your pet's teeth and reduce tarter and plaque build-up.

Diabetes Mellitus—Diabetes in cats and dogs can be related to factors like obesity, poor nutrition and oral health. Weight management through balanced, pet-specific nutrition and good oral care are key parts of a preventive strategy.

Coat and skin issues—Irritated or flaky skin and a dull coat can be related to a variety of issues including allergies, parasites and food. You can support a healthy coat and skin by feeding your pet a food high in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, as well as Vitamin E and other antioxidants.
