Anti-Aging: Younger Skin, Great Complexion -- Three Simple Steps

LIVE CHAT

(Prevention.com) -- Saggy skin, wrinkles, and rough patches add digits to your perceived age. Look younger by following these 3 simple skin care rules.

1. Slip on shades. “Large lenses shade your skin from the sun, which we all know causes lines, but they also keep you from squinting, which can cause wrinkles,” says Ranella Hirsch, MD, a dermatologist in Boston. While you’re at it, get your eyes checked, since squinting indoors as you try to focus can also cause wrinkles around your eyes and on your forehead.

2. Maintain your weight to keep skin firm. If the choice is between constantly losing weight, then regaining it, or settling for a few extra pounds, go for the latter. “As we age, the dieting cycle leads to a saggy, unfirm complexion because our skin can’t bounce back as easily after stretching slightly to accommodate pounds gained and lost,” explains Heidi Waldorf, MD, an associate clinical professor of dermatology at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City.

3.Stock up on—you guessed it—sunscreen. It’s easy to make a connection between sunlight and sun spots, but rays are just as detrimental to the supportive structure of skin, and UV exposure causes crepiness and a rough texture too. “You can pay hundreds of dollars on fancy firming creams, but none of them is as effective as drugstore sunscreen,” Dr. Hirsch says.
