Prrr-fect Nutrition for Your Pets

(NC) — Canadians are becoming more health conscientious and looking to make better nutritional choices for their families. But what about their furry family members? Our pets' health is just as dependent on proper nutrition as our own. Here are some tips to keep in mind when choosing the right food for your pet:

1. As with human food, it's important to read food labels Check labels and avoid products that contain corn, wheat, soy, fillers, by-products, added colour, added sugar or artificial preservatives.

2. Check for ingredients that promote health Certain brands contain nutritious ingredients without additives that help promote the health of your pet, such as President's Choice brand Nutrition First Dry Dog and Cat Food. Comparable to specialty brands these products have been specially formulated to include healthy ingredients including: • Prebiotics and probiotics – for digestive health • Yucca Schidigera – a prebiotic to reduce fecal odour • Protein such as chicken, salmon or lamb – for strong muscles • Grains such as brown rice, oatmeal and barley – to enhance energy and vitality

3. Choose products for the right age Make sure you have the right balance of nutrients required for your pet's size and age. A kitten or puppy has different nutritional needs than an older animal.

4. Make the switch slowly If you're changing your pet's food, remember it takes time for the animal to adjust. When you make changes, be sure to slowly transition during a seven to 10 day period. Begin by feeding your pet its regular food with a small amount of the new food mixed in then gradually increase the amount of new food.
