Ontario man uses cross country biking to honour friend

An Ontario man is using cross country biking to honour a friend who passed away while waiting for a heart transplant. CTV News reports on June 14 Cayse Ruiter is biking 8,000 kilometers for his friend Matthew Antolin. Matthew died in 2012, but Cayse wants to raise awareness about organ donation.

Ruiter hopes his decision to bike across Canada will inspire others to consider being organ donors and to pay attention to people who need help. Cayse Ruiter is not the first person to do a cross country mission. Similar stories have been shared on the alp sport Facebook page and other websites. However, Cayse hopes Antolin’s story will inspire others.

Matthew Antolin died at the age of 27 after waiting several years for a heart transplant. He was actually at the top of the list, but he was still not able to get a transplant. Cayse Ruiter has stated that he started thinking about doing a cross country bike ride months ago.

He started his journey on May 31, and it will continue for several weeks. Ruiter is calling this the “Outlive Yourself” trip because organ donation makes it possible for people to save lives.

He is chronicling his entire journey on a personal blog with frequent updates and pictures. Cayse has been posting about the people he meets on his trip, the condition of his bike and the beautiful scenery he is witnessing as he goes through Canada.
