Incontinence sufferers are not alone

(NC) -- If you look around any room of 10 people, chances are that at least one is dealing with incontinence. Approximately 3.3 million Canadians are affected by bladder control issues, but the topic is not widely discussed. Many sufferers are deterred from talking about it or seeking help because of feelings of shame and embarrassment.

The truth is, there are many different reasons for bladder control problems. Any kind of surgery below the waist that affects muscle control, such as prostate surgery, can result in incontinence. Many women find that after childbirth they have lost some bladder control, at least temporarily. Reduced muscle strength is also a natural part of getting older. With an aging “boomer” population, more and more adults are suffering from incontinence.

The Depend brand is asking Canadians to help eliminate the stigma associated with incontinence by joining the Try It On Canada challenge. Cheryl Burke, a Dancing with the Stars celebrity, and former pro hockey player, PJ Stock, recently tried Depend on for charity – and to encourage a more open dialogue about this health issue.
