Are you forgetting to prevent sun damage?

(NC) -- As we toss off heavy clothes for much lighter next-to-nothings this summer, it would appear that getting a suntan is still a popular thing to do, despite the constant warnings of damage, aging, and skin cancer.

Take a look at these survey results of adult Canadians, conducted recently by Ipsos Reid for the skincare brands Neutrogena and Aveeno of Johnson & Johnson:

• 33 percent of Canadians do not see tanning as a risky behavior;

• 61 percent think they look healthier with a tan;

• 48 percent think it's important to get a base tan before a vacation to avoid sunburns;

• 54 percent think it's fine to tan as long as they don't burn;

• 69 percent are under the impression that skin cancer is correctible if detected early enough;

• 25 percent do not use sunscreen;

• 90 percent have never had skin cancer screening from a dermatologist.

“As health care advisors, we can't keep everyone completely out of the sunshine, but we can keep insisting on sunscreen,” says Toronto dermatologist, Dr. Paul Cohen. “Any time we are outside, we need broad spectrum protection from head to toe against harmful UVA and UVB sun rays – and we also need to moisturize and prevent dryness to make skin feel good. In my opinion, one of the most important features in sunscreen is that it feels good to wear so people will want to use it. Hydration is key.”

Today, we know about the hydration benefits found in oatmeal, but did you know that we can now get both sun protection and superior hydration with just one head-to-toe application?

“You will find that the same Active Naturals colloidal oatmeal found in your favourite Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion is now in our Protect + Hydrate sunscreen collection,” says company brand manager, Ehsan Sarrafian. “If applied frequently, the nourishing properties of the oats can help to reverse skin dehydration, leaving it looking and feeling healthier than before the sun exposure. The oat proteins in Active Naturals colloidal oatmeal are formulated skillfully to leave a protective barrier on the skin, helping to prevent water loss. It moisturizes and helps to reverse the effects caused by the sun and by other environmental stressors.”
