Hibiscus plants are often used as landscape shrubs because of their beautiful and brightly coloured blossoms. But according to a study, these pretty flowers can also be used to make tea. And its popular in many continents and cultures, from Asia, Europe to Africa.Many horticulturalists think that hibiscus flowers originated on the Asian continent’s tropical regions. Others speculate that they originated in India because many people who live in Polynesia have Indian ancestry.

Hibiscus tea has been described as a herbal tea made as an infusion from crimson or deep magenta-coloured calyces (sepals) of the roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa) flower. It is consumed both hot and cold.

The drink is sometimes called roselle (a name for the flower) or rosella (Australia); sorrel in Jamaica, Belize, Barbados, Guyana, Dominica, and Trinidad and Tobago; red sorrel in the wider Caribbean; and Agua/Rosa de Jamaica or simply Jamaica in the United States, México, and Central America. It is also known as "Zobo" or Bissap in African countries like Nigeria and also well known as a medical remedy in most Asian and African countries.

In Africa, a traditional zobo drink as it is called may contain some pineapples, ginger and garlic. This is believed to rid the body of toxins and bacteria. In China, Hibiscus isbelieved to aid in dealing with ailments like arterial hypertension, heart problems, diabetes, burning sensation during urination, menstrual disorders, cough, fever, and so on. It is used in traditional Chinese medicine, in particular.

The herb helps control dandruff, seborrhea, and hair fall as well. Hence, it works as an effective tonic for hair and scalp. Moreover, Chinese Hibiscus is also cultivated as an ornamental plant. It has been associated with lowering blood cholesterol level, decreasing blood pressure and fighting heart diseases. 

 Hibiscus also has been used by the Chinese as hair treatments, it’s used in preventing hair damage and hair loss. To prepare the remedy boil some dried hibiscus leaves and flowersand mix some coconut oil boil thoroughly, allow to cool and then massage the scalp thoroughly with the remedy. It is also helpful in combating dandruff, hibiscus has been said to toxin removal abilities It can also be used to get rid of boils and headaches.

Other reports say that Chinese Hibiscus has expectorant, antipyretic, antimicrobial, hypoglycemic, astringent, anti-inflammatory, emollient, laxative, refrigerant, emmenagogue, and aphrodisiac properties. It has a flavonoid known as cyanidin, which has antioxidant as well as anti-inflammatory qualities.

Hibiscus contains antioxidants that reduce the build-up of fatty deposits in arteries. Thus, when taken regularly for a few weeks, Chinese Hibiscus benefits in lowering blood cholesterol level, decreasing blood pressure, and fighting heart disease.

There are over a thousand Hibiscus tea brands in America, already processed and packaged, some have other medicinal fruits or tea added or flavoured but its widely used in the United States as well as in other developed countries and can be found for as low as 5$ on Amazon. Its benefits or potential can't be over emphasized. Hibiscus is the Malaysian national flower.
