Make your credit card pay off on holiday shopping

(NC) Why not take the stress out of holiday expenses with help from your rewards card? Use the points earned from shopping, along with redemption options, and this costly season is going to be far easier on your wallet. If you'd like some guidance, RBC is offering a few tips on how to get the most out of your rewards credit card:

Set a budget. Think about how much you plan to spend on your purchases and the potential points you can earn. Also, consider how many rewards points you currently have on your card that you can allocate towards your holiday spending. Use the information to create a budget that you can manage. That way when January arrives, you can pay off your holiday purchases.

Shop online. Avoid the busy malls by doing your shopping online. It not only helps you avoid the crowds, but also allows you to potentially earn more points on your rewards card. For instance, you can shop at your favourite retailers through the RBC Rewards eMall and earn bonus points at the same time.

Redeem your points for gift cards, merchandise and other rewards. Use your points towards gift cards and merchandise. Redeem gift cards for yourself and use them towards your purchases. Gift cards are also great last minute presents and are perfect for the hard-to-shop-for person on your list. Some reward programs also allow you to redeem points for financial rewards, such as a Registered Education Savings Plan contribution, or a charitable donation.

Pay down your credit card balance with your points. Use the points accumulated to pay down your credit card balance. For example, RBC's Payback with Points redemption option allows cardholders to redeem their points towards their credit card balance online and through their mobile devices.
