Ottawa Weekend: Things to do

The trees changing colour can only mean one thing: Oktoberfest. Or RibtoberfestBeer and food, at least.

There are a few shows to add to your list this weekend. Chic Gamine combine French pop with Motown, and Basia Bulat sings from her latest album. Jadea Kelly will be out at the Black Sheep Thursday night, while Craig Cardiff will perform a couple of shows there over the rest of the weekend. Jon Hynes releases his first EP at the Clock Tower with help from a few friends, and it’s First Funk Fridays down at the Whalesbone. Get your dance on with the Girlfriends DJ crew at Raw Sugar Saturday night, or catch the Skullcap Promo Music + Art party down at Babylon.

The Ottawa International Film Festival showcases international films, with a special local focus Thursday evening. They’ve also got a music video challenge going on, with local bands and filmmakers teaming up to show off their creativity.

If your sweet tooth has been missing some action, Cookie Jam is here to save the day. And Hidden Harvest’s Bounty Bash is happening at Mugshots tonight – guaranteed to have delicious, local treats.

It’s also comedy weekend here in town, with This is That geniuses performing and a few Allstars from Toronto putting on a show.

Book lovers have a full plate this weekend, with Wayson Choy and Lisa Carter in town to read from their latest works. And, if you’re a Jane Austen fan or want to find out what makes these fans tick, head to Among the Janeites on Sunday afternoon.

The Ottawa Art Gallery is offering a curatorial walkthrough of their latest exhibit of Dave Heath’s work, and it’s Art for Awareness at the Lord Elgin on Saturday, highlighting the issues around human trafficking. There’s also an international photography exhibit happening at 25One Community, capturing images from the war zones around the world.

Lastly, dig around in the dirt a little on Saturday – it’s International Archaeology Day! What else have you got going on, Ottawa? Let us know below.
