He wants a sympathetic shoulder to cry on, and potentially more. Either way, this is a hotbed of trouble that you should steer clear of. Why do you want to hear about his girlfriend problems? He isn't really looking for advice -- he could go to a friend for that. No, he wants you to boost his ego  and make him feel better. He's trying to rekindle something, even if just for a hook-up because it's preferable to dealing with his problems with his girlfriend. It's the easy way out basically. 

So don't be there when he contacts you. If he really wanted to be your friend, or get back together, he'd do it under better circumstances. Let him sort out his issues with his girlfriend. The last place you want to be right now is in the middle of that.
