Since a lot of Americans that lived in Newfoundland during that time, they have influenced a lot on the people of Newfoundland. This made the Americans more preferable than the Canadians. Fortunately, it was in the year 1945 that the British Empire realized that Newfoundland has better hopes with Canada. And so the Britain encouraged Newfoundland to join in with Canada instead of the United States.

Joey Smallwood, the star of this book, led this confederation with Canada. He believed that if Newfoundland will unite with Canada, they have higher chances in improving their economy and will still retain the British traditions that were influenced on them. Right after the union with Canada, Joey Smallwood immediately became the first prime minister of Newfoundland.
