Sex: Was virginity ever a virtue or just a myth?

We are in a period of time where young people are bold in speaking about sexuality. There are some communities still living in Stone Age where virginity has to be proved when a girl is getting married.

Loss of virginity is still believed to be as a result of sexual intercourse but hymen rapture can be as a result of many things, sexual intercourse being one of them. A gynecologist from Nagpur Dr Vaidehi Marathe on a panel that conducted a discussion on lifting the veil of hypocrisy on virginity gave a testimony on the number of clients he gets where young girls are seeking for hymenoplasty procedures to get their hymen reconstructed.

Come on! Do girls really have to go through surgery due to how the society is hypocritically dealing with some issues? Voltaire a famous French philosopher and writer once said that virginity should be considered a barrier that only separates ignorance from knowledge and considering it as a virtue is just a childish false notion of the human spirit.

Many argue that traditions and the upbringing of the children and the guilt they feel is what drive the young girls into going for such procedures. The blame game is sometimes pushed too far because for boys loss of virginity proves masculinity according to Dr Rupal Kothekar a gynecologist who was in the same panel and wonders where is that respect for the girl child that is taught to boys.

Its time people face the truth that teenagers do not only talk about sex but they do the act. Both boys and girls have to be openly taught about this.

Some teenagers caught indulging in oral sex which is very common among teenagers between the ages of 15 and 19 argued that oral sex is not sex because for many teenagers the only form of sex they know is penetration.

Suggestions from a research conducted in Pre-Clinton times together with recent studies states that most teenagers consider this as not sex. Many teens will indulge in this because they believe they will still keep their virginity. Modernism and Tradition are never going to be on the same recipe, people should decide firmly on which side to be on.
