Toronto Raptors show promise for the future

We have all heard the constant promises of "We are building for the future."... but when is this future?  Back when Bryan Colangelo became the President and General Manger of the Toronto Raptors, he promised change and promise for the future.  We have received one Atlantic division crown, an executive of the year award and other than 2007, and five disappointing seasons.

One thing hindering the growth of the Raptors is attracting stars.  During the 2012 off-season, Colangelo tried signing Steve Nash but Nash chose to sign with the Lakers rather than sign with the team in his country.  However, the raptors were able to land Kyle Lowry in a trade with the Houston Rockets.  NBA sources call Lowry a "pit bull", doing whatever he can to win games.

Last night’s loss to the Pacers wasn't a complete disappointment.  The Raptors showed a lot of promise.  Their brand of basketball is upbeat and entertaining and will probably be in most games.  One bright spot was rookie Jonas Valanciunas who showed that he can play with the big boys of the NBA.  After struggling during the first half against Roy Hibbert, he was able to buckle down defensively and keep Hibbert off the score sheet in the second half.  He also had a double-double with twelve points and ten rebounds.  An impressive showing in his first NBA game.

This season will go a long way to letting us know in which direction the Raptors are heading.  If everyone stays healthy and Coach Dwanye Casey sticks to his defense first approach, making the playoffs will be a very achievable goal for the Raptors.  In regards to last night’s game, Casey was quoted as saying "I thought we showed more grit and spunk than we did all last year."  With a statement like that after only one game, and Demar DeRozan signed for another four years, the future does indeed look very promising for the Toronto Raptors.
