NHL playoffs first round preview: Eastern Conference







The NHL playoffs begin Tuesday, with three games featuring Western Conference teams. However, eventually the Eastern Conference will get into the action as well. Here's a preview of the four first round matchups from the East. 1. Pittsburgh Penguins v. 8. New York Islanders: These are two teams perceived very differently by the general public, and rightfully so. The Islanders, after years of rebuilding, finally have gotten back to the playoffs. They were led there by the player they got for bottoming out a few seasons ago; John Tavares. Tavares was outstanding, scoring 28 goals and 47 points, but Matt Moulson was right behind him with 44 points. However, those guys have been around for a while as this team lost. What really helped them were a couple of veterans who they had to cajole into playing for them. Lubomir Visnovsky scored 14 points and was a plus-12, which was huge for this team. Evgeni Nabokov had a .910 save percentage, a major improvement over past goalies. Read more..
