CFL Labour Day Classic: Bombers Beat Riders With Last Second Field Goal

After being ahead most of the game, The Bombers needed a 42-yard field goal with less than two seconds remaining on the clock to take their first win on a Mark’s Labour Day Weekend at Raiders home field in Regina in the last 12 years with a 28-25 final score.

With this win, the Bombers broke a streak of 11 consecutive winless games at the Roughriders home and at the same time, they kept their five games winning streak that keeps them fighting for a chance to go to the playoffs in the West Division.

Medlock, in his first season with the Bombers, became the hero of the game, and was almost perfect, with 7 field goals converted out of 8 attempts. With this victory, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers improved their record to 6-4 while the Saskatchewan Roughriders fell down to a grim 1-9 record.

The quarterbacks showed up for the game with Raiders’ Darian Durant going for 36 completions out of 47 attempts for a total 399 yards with 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions. Meanwhile, Bombers’ Matt Nichols went for 27 completed passes in 39 attempts for 341 total yards and a touchdown, with no interceptions.

Stats aside, this game was a complete rollercoaster, with swift changes of momentum and a winning field goal with almost no time on the clock, to add to the thrill of the game, we even got an 86-yard punt return by Roughriders’ Kendial Lawrence that tied the game with less than a minute left in the clock, but to really build into the last minute suspense, the kicker, Tyler Crapigna failed the conversion attempt, which set the scene for the Bombers’ winning drive.

At the end of the first half it seemed that the Bombers had it under control with a comfortable 16-3 victory, but the Riders rallied in the second half and went the extra mile to finally put themselves in the lead with less than a minute left to play.

But the Bombers’ winning drive would have gone unfinished without a Pass interference call that put them in range, and the right position for Medlock to kick the winning field goal.

After the game ended, there was an incident worth of being reported, as one of the Winnipeg coaches appeared to collapse, but the team promptly reassured everyone by posting this update: “precautionary measures were taken post-game to ensure a coach's health — everything is fine.”

After this nail-bitter of a game a “rematch” is coming our way soon enough, as the Blue Bombers will host the Roughriders in Winnipeg for this year’s edition of “The Banjo Bowl.”

“The Banjo Bowl” series is tied at 6 wins a side, since the rematch game became a rivalry event in 2004 after the infamous comments made by Bombers kicker Troy Westwood before the 2003 Western Semifinals in which he was quoted referring to people from Regina as “a bunch of banjo-pickin' inbreds,” and to add to the fire, he backhanded them claiming that "the vast majority of the people in Saskatchewan have no idea how to play the banjo."

The Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries Banjo Bowl as it is officially called due to its sponsorship deal, will be played on September 10th at 3:00pm and will be broadcasted on TSN.

The Bombers expect to take the lead on the series against the Riders by taking advantage of the slump the Roughriders are experienced, they have a winless (0-6) record against West Division teams throughout this season, and The Bombers expect to make sure to add another loss to that negative record.
